Michael Barkema was awarded the 2017 Upsilon Phi Delta Scholarship for the 2017-2018 academic year, made possible through the Association of University Programs in Health Administration. As a member of the Upsilon Phi Delta Honor Society, Michael was also recognized for his academic success as a graduate student and serving as president of the Master of Health Administration Leaders of Tomorrow (MHALT). MHALT is a student organization that aims to provide social, professional, networking opportunities for MHA students. It serves as a conduit between students and faculty—almost like a student government—also providing opportunities to network outside of the classroom and office.
Michael is completing his Master of Health Administration at Mason. As he explains, “I chose Mason because of the flexibility in program. I work full time as a Pathologists’ Assistant (PA) for Inova Fair Oaks, so I needed that flexibility and close proximity. With Mason being in the DC area, it wasn’t only convenient for me but also close to professional organizations, hospitals, and more. While traditionally many PAs would go to medical school, I was interested in a different path. My primary career experience was clinical, so my degree is giving me the expertise in the business part of it so that I can move into a different role. I am also impressed by how much professional experience the faculty have and their connections to the surrounding health care systems. The range of experience and diversity amongst the professors is very impressive. Mason has done a great job of preparing me for where I want to go.”
