Shaping the Future of Public Health

2023-24 Annual Report

As Virginia’s first College of Public Health, our students and faculty further embrace interprofessional collaboration as the cornerstone of public health progress. Throughout our Annual Report, learn more about how our dedicated students, faculty, and staff are shaping the future of public health, including:

  • A transformative $21 million gift—our largest ever—will fund interprofessional, AI-powered bruise identification research over the next five years. See page 14.

  • College faculty are innovating the student experience and health care through our Center for Innovative Technologies and Simulation and an artificial intelligence chatbot, respectively. See page 16.

  • Gary Taylor, MSW ‘15, takes community support to the next level by training barbers, who already serve as pillars for mental health among Black men, on how to further support patrons in times of need. See page 20.

  • For the second year in a row, our Center for Health Workforce was selected by the Health Resources and Services Administration to lead statewide initiatives, reinforcing our leadership in building Virginia’s public health workforce. See page 28.

  • Students worked in interdisciplinary teams through the Learning Laboratory for Community Health to create location-based wellness models for adolescents, tackling real-world public health challenges. See page 35.
