The Department of Rehabilitation Science, within the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS), is now offering a Bachelor of Science in Rehabilitation Science.
The degree has received “facilitated approval” from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), the Commonwealth’s coordinating body for higher education. The “facilitated approval” designation recognizes that Mason’s BS in Rehabilitation Science is the first and only program of its kind in the Commonwealth.
“This new BS in Rehabilitation Science is a real innovation in educating students who are interested in pursuing rehabilitation-related careers or an advanced degree in rehabilitation science,” said Andrew Guccione, chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Science. “With an emerging societal awareness of the need for physical rehabilitation to restore function in people living with chronic illnesses and disability, our graduates will be able to meet a growing need within our current health care system and in community-based post-rehabilitation programs.”
The degree’s curriculum is focused on integrating anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and physics with applied and clinical sciences to provide students with a thorough understanding of human function and emerging interventions in rehabilitation. Graduates will be prepared to apply to graduate school in rehabilitation-related careers, such as physical therapy or occupational therapy, as well as community-based programs outside of the health care system designed for cardiac rehabilitation, spinal cord injuries, stroke, and cancer.
