August 23, 2023Associate Professor Carol Cleaveland began exploring Latino immigration in 2004 utilizing ethnographic research methods and working with Mexican day laborers in Freehold, N.J., to understand how the day laborers negotiated police harassment and anti-immigrant ordinances. Since 2013, Dr. Cleaveland’s work has focused on Latinas from Central America and immigration-related trauma, including experiences in human smuggling. She was awarded study leave during the Spring 2023 semester to complete her work on two projects.

Perry to the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology (BEST). As a BEST appointee, Dean Perry will collaborate with fellow experts to provide government agencies with independent guidance on the impact of environmental exposures on human health and ecosystems. An internationally recognized researcher, respected mentor, and public health leader, Dean Perry’s expertise on environmental epidemiology will guide the national dialogue on environmental health.

After several years teaching exercise science to college students in Texas, he’s now part of the first cohort of students in the College of Public Health’s Master in Nutrition Program dietetics concentration, now beginning its second year.
