Congratulations to Julio Diaz, an academic advisor in the College of Public Health, for being named the 2023-24 Resident Student Organization (RSO) Advisor of the Year for his service as an advisor to The Águilas Mentoring Program.
“Julio’s passion for student success is evident in every interaction he has. Everything he does prioritizes students and he’s nothing less than one hundred percent committed to bringing out the best in every student he comes in contact with, whether he’s their advisor or not,” said Maria Perez, associate director of undergraduate student success in the College’s Office of Student Affairs.
Diaz was recognized on April 18 when members of the Mason community gathered in Dewberry Hall to celebrate the accomplishments of students, faculty, and staff during the 2023-2024 academic year. Recipients of Quill Awards are prominent leaders, individuals, and organizations that have demonstrated providing meaningful impact to the university. The Àguilas Mentoring Program assists freshmen, sophomores, and transfer students in transitioning successfully to Mason by connecting them with a strong academic and professional network of upperclassmen. In the program, mentors and mentees are paired based on personal, educational, and professional goals and interests to promote academic achievement, relationship building, and leadership development.
Distinguished Quill Awards are the highest honor student organizations can receive, including recognition from top administrators at the university. The RSO Advisor of the Year Quill Award is given to a RSO advisor who has showcased excellence in service to a Mason RSO through guidance and support while allowing student leadership to flourish in the organization's direction.
