George Mason University’s College of Public Health is pleased to announce that Katherine Scafide, associate professor, has been selected to be a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. Induction into the academy honors Scafide’s accomplishments in the field by her colleagues within and outside the profession. Fellows are selected based on their contributions and impact to advance the public’s health.

"Dr. Scafide is a true innovator who is making a large impact on public health and nursing with her alternate light research. She is dearly respected by her PhD students and also finds time to serve in Mason, nursing professional organizations, and on a National Institute of Standards and Technology committee. No one is more deserving of this honor than her,” said Margaret Rodan, acting Director of the School of Nursing.

As a forensic nurse, Scafide’s focuses on advancing equity in the medical identification and forensic documentation of injuries, particularly for patients of color, through innovative use of technology. She has received several federal awards to support these efforts. Her work was recently featured on the cover of the American Journal of Nursing.

The academy is a policy organization and an honorific society that recognizes nursing's most accomplished leaders in policy, research, practice, administration, and academia to advance equitable solutions to the nation’s most complex health care challenges. Academy Fellows, from over 40 countries, hold a wide variety of influential roles in health care. Induction into the Fellowship represents more than recognition of one's accomplishments within the nursing profession. Fellows contribute their collective expertise to the academy, engaging with health leaders nationally and globally to improve health and achieve health equity by impacting policy through nursing leadership, innovation, and science.

Scafide and the 2023 inductees will be recognized for their substantial, sustained, and significant contributions to health and health care at the academy’s annual Health Policy Conference on October 5-7. Learn more about the Academy and visit the policy conference website for more details.
