Master of Science in Global Health

Prepare to conduct multidisciplinary research on health issues of global importance in Mason’s MS in Global Health. This degree incorporates epidemiology, biostatistics, sociocultural influences on health and behavior, global health systems, communicable and non-communicable diseases of global importance, and migrant health. You’ll examine the public health implications of globalization and learn to think critically about how specific global health challenges may be solved in culturally appropriate ways.

 

Flexible Formats

Mason offers part– and full-time program completion, with most classes taught in the afternoons and evenings, and hybrid course options are available.

Interprofessional

Gain an interprofessional education that will prepare you to work in multi-disciplinary teams to deliver the best health outcomes for all.

Thesis Completion

Gain relevant real-world knowledge by working closely with a Global Community Health (GCH) faculty member to systematically investigate a problem or issue with global health implications.

Program of Study

The MS, Global Health program is 42 credits. This includes: 

  • 6 courses (18 credits) in the global health core 
  • 4 courses (12 credits) in the research core 
  • 2 electives (6 credits) 
  • 1 thesis (6 credits) 

Students may take classes on a part-time or full-time basis but must complete all program requirements within six years of first enrollment. Most students will complete the program in two or three years. 

MS, Global Health Competencies

Students who complete the MS in Global Health will be able to achieve the following competencies: 

  1. Demonstrate independent research conduct through the completion of a research thesis related to a current issue in global health. 
  2. Explain roles, functions, funding sources, organizational structure, and involvement in global health of organizations in the global health arena. 
  3. Communicate epidemiologic evidence related to global health to lay and scientific audiences. 
  4. Utilize data and literature to recognize global health problems. 
  5. Explain the social, economic, and environmental factors that are important determinants of diseases of global health importance.
