June 6, 2014 - The 6th annual College Dream Tour was held May 3, 2014 at George Mason University. Over 150 students, parents, and mentors attended. Guest speaker Dr. Terry Morris, a NASA scientist, shared his experiences as a victim of ten years of severe child abuse. His inspirational story described how he rose from the trauma of his early life to be one of the top scientists in the space program.
The College Dream Tour is the culmination of a SOCW 340 class project that helps students learn about organizations, social justice, community organizing, and project development. The event targets youth between the ages of 11-15 who would otherwise not consider going to college. This year's Tour featured special student performances and the participation of nearly 20 Mason athletes.
SOCW 340 students developed handouts covering topics including dropout prevention and the benefits of post secondary education. The handouts were the result of extensive research and were designed to be attractive and age appropriate. Youth participants also had the opportunity to have their pictures taken in a cap and gown.
Dr. Molly Davis is the faculty advisor for the project.
